1788 New Jersey Copper. Maris 77-dd, W-5535. Rarity-3. Horses Head Right, Running Fox Before Legend. EF-40 (PCGS).;148.9 grains. Die State 1 for the Maris 77-dd combination, before any damage had been done to either die. Golden brown with bluish highlights and some darker toning at lower right obverse, this coin has light even granularity in the fields that affects the legibility of the first two numerals in the date. The devices are sharp, well-formed and complete, and the distinctive "running fox" leading the reverse legend is especially clear. This specimen was Ropers duplicate, and even with a smoother primary piece, he thought well enough of the detail and overall visual appeal of this piece to keep it in his holdings. It will surely be prized by its next owner too.;From the Dr. Gordon Shaw Collection. Earlier ex John L. Roper, 2nd Collection, Stacks, December 1983, lot 315.
