1788 Vermont Copper. RR-27, Bressett 18-W, W-2205. Rarity-4. Bust Right. AU-50.;106.2 grains. Light golden brown, with some intermittent areas of darker chestnut on both sides. Well centered, the obverse especially so, with nearly full denticulation on that side. The peripheries show some minor granularity and verdigris spots that have blended quite well with the coins surfaces. The strike is sharp and about as fully detailed as one might find an example of RR-27, with fine hair strands visible in obverse and even reverse effigys hair. Though not a distinct Red Book type, this die combination is sufficiently different in terms of head style, reverse effigy and punctuation from most 1788 Mailed Bust Left types that it can be included in an extended type set of the series. In addition to an illustrious pedigree, this piece was used to picture the type in the photographic plates of Crosbys Early of America, and its obverse was used to in Ryders own reference on the Vermont series. A sharp, visually appealing specimen with an illustrious pedigree.;From Stacks sale of the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part I, October 2003, lot 62. Earlier ex George M.
