1652 Pine Tree Threepence. Noe-36, Salmon 2-B, W-640. Rarity-4. Without Pellets at Trunk. EF-40 (PCGS).;17.0 grains. Richly toned in steel and pewter gray, this is a boldly defined example of both the type and variety that will do nicely in an advanced collection. The reverse is nicely centered, the border just a bit tight to the letters at the upper and lower peripheries. Obverse impression slightly off center to 6 oclock with the lower border through the letters THVS, similar to the strike on the Salmon plate coin. Light waves to the planchet are evident over the lower left and, especially, upper right obverse, but wear is universally light with no areas of excessive loss of detail. Smooth in hand with no troublesome abrasions, faint remnants of satiny luster persist to further tempt the viewer.;From the Dr. Gordon Shaw Collection. From our (Stacks) sale of June 1987, lot 6. Lot tag and collector auction with attribution and provenance notes included.
