1722 Rosa Americana Penny. Martin 2.23-C.6, W-1264. Rarity-4. UTILE DULCI. AU-55 (PCGS).;112.7 grains. Satiny steel-brown surfaces are hard and tight with only a few areas of trivial pitting widely scattered over both sides. Overall smooth in hand, two dull abrasions in the lower left reverse field are mentioned solely for accuracy. The obverse is a bit tight to the left border, but even so we note complete denticulation around that side. The reverse is ideally centered, and both sides feature sharp definition that readily upholds the validity of the Choice AU grade. A late state of this reverse die, used here in its only marriage, repunching to the stop between the words AMERICANA and UTILE is virtually indistinct, replaced in that area by a number of tiny die rust pits. Repunching to the rosette after the date remains bold.;From the Dr. Gordon Shaw Collection. From Kagins 1986 Milwaukee ANA Sale, August 1986, lot 5005. Lot tag and collector envelope with provenance notation included.
