1652 Pine Tree Shilling. Large Planchet. Noe-2, Salmon 2-C, W-700. Rarity-4. Without Pellets at Trunk. EF Details--Smoothed (PCGS).;57.7 grains. Richly toned in lavender-gray with the overall design sharp, there is much to recommend this coin to the Massachusetts silver enthusiast. Obverse off center to 6 oclock with the lower border through the letters IN and MA. The reverse impression is better centered, although the border on that side is through the tops of all peripheral lettering. A slight bend in the planchet is noted, as is light pitting throughout the reverse, but the most significant detraction is evidence of tooling in the open fields that explains the PCGS qualifier. Quite pleasing in hand, nonetheless, and a more than respectable example of both the type and variety.;From the Dr. Gordon Shaw Collection. Purchased from Early American Numismatics, March 1982. Collector envelope with attribution and provenance notes included.
