1916 Buffalo Nickel. Proof-65 (PCGS). CAC.;Satiny in texture with a razor sharp strike, this handsome Gem also exhibits light, even toning in pewter gray. This issue is the last in the early Matte Proof Buffalo nickel series (Proof coinage for this type resumed in 1936 after a 20-year hiatus). As noted in David Langes reference on this series:<p><em>"Some portion of the 600 pieces coined was almost certainly consigned to oblivion when the Mint ceased sales of [P]roof coins at the end of the year. Among the rare survivors, [G]ems are the rule. It seems that collectors recognized the added value of these [P]roofs early on and took care to preserve them."</em><p>The present Gem was certainly handled with kid gloves throughout its lifetime, as even the most casual glance will prove. Expect strong competition when bidding on this key date rarity.;From our (Stacks) session of Auction 81, July 1981, part of lot 1690.
