1825 Capped Head Left Quarter Eagle. BD-2. Rarity-4+. Repunched 5, Distant Fraction. AU-58 (PCGS).;The satiny golden-olive surfaces of this Choice AU quarter eagle also feature a splash of vivid copper-rose iridescence over the lower left reverse. The strike is sharply defined and well centered. This is a lovely near-Mint example of one of the most challenging U.S. coin types to collect.<p>After a break of 13 years, the Mint resumed production of the quarter eagle in 1821, but only off and on for the next few years. As a type, the Capped Head Left quarter eagles were never produced in large quantities. Indeed, the 4,434 examples struck in 1825 represented the high water mark in terms of mintage. This output was accomplished using three different die pairs that employed two obverse and two reverse dies. The BD-2 pairing features a reverse die that had been used on every quarter eagle since reintroduction. 1825 proved to be its final use as a terminal die crack developed that ran from the border at the first T in STATES all the way to the border below the primary digit 2 in the denomination. Some 2,000 to 3,000 coins are estimated to have been produced with the BD-2 die pair, making it the most available variety of 1825 quarter eagle. This date is popular not only for inclusion in a type set, but also among the specialists of early American gold coins.;
