CANADA. Imperial Bank of Canada. 50 Dollars, 1.1.1923. CH# 375-18-14. PCGS Banknote Choice Uncirculated 63. Howland - Phipps signature combination. The Imperial Bank of Canada was established in 1873 in Toronto by a group of businessmen. Its first banknotes were issued a few years later, in 1875. It would continue to issue banknotes until World War II in various series, including some of the most iconic chartered banknotes. The 1923 series was the second to last series of notes issued by the bank in large size. It consisted of $5 to $100 denominations, and most (except for the $100, of which no issued examples are known) come with two signature varieties. This is the first variety, with Howland signature at left. Very scarce in uncirculated grades and our online auction archive reveals just three previous offerings of this denomination, all graded Very Fine or worse. This example, which is the sole finest graded in the PCGS population report, is a lovely example with no folds, fresh color and exceptional eye-appeal. This is the only uncirculated example graded by PCGS, while PMG has graded one as well slightly higher at Choice Uncirculated 64. A wonderful example and exceptional opportunity for the Canadian Chartered specialist.
