Type with large cloud/plain edge. A type not often encountered, and one that generate immense enthusiasm when it is, this EXCEPTIONALLY RARE and lofty pattern issue in gold serves as a crowning jewel for any advanced cabinet fortunate enough to acquire it. The surfaces offer a great vibrancy of brilliance paired with a pleasing olive-yellow nature imparted unto the gold. Meanwhile, the design displays the elegant craftsmanship utilized in the preparation of the dies, with sharp, crisp calligraphy observed in the characters and an undoubted lifelike appearance leaping forth from the imperial dragon.

This large gold issue was created in 1906 by the Ministry of Revenue at the Tientsin Mint during the 32nd year of the reign of Kuang-hsu. Struck in 98% pure gold and on an experimental basis, these pattern-only issues made their way into full production. The plans to issue gold coinage in units of one Tael for circulation never materialized, however, due to China s lack of gold reserves along with their de facto adoption of the silver standard, meaning that these specimens were never released into circulation.
