(t) CHINA. Duo of Dollars (2 Pieces), Years 34 & 3 (1908 & 1911). Tientsin Mint. Kuang-hsu (Guangxu) & Hsuan-t ung (Xuantong [Puyi]). Both PCGS Certified. 1) Provincial, Chihli (Pei Yang) . 7 Mace 2 Candareens (Dollar), Year 34 of Kuang-hsu (1908). PCGS MS-65+. L&M-465; cf. K-208 (for type); KM-Y-73.2; WS-0642. Frozen date issue with plain 4. 2) Empire . Dollar, Year 3 of Hsuan-t ung (1911). PCGS MS-67. L&M-37; K-227; KM-Y-31; WS-0046B. Variety without dot after "DOLLAR" and with extra flame. Characters side struck with SPECIMEN dies. A wholly remarkable pairing of glistening Gem crowns emanating from the Tientsin Mint, and very likely from the same time period as well. The "frozen date" nature of the Chihli "plain 4" types means that the striking of the Year 34s continued after the death of Kuang-hsu late in 1908, with the type likely struck all the way through the ensuing reign of Hsuan-t ung. As such, it becomes very easy to see that the Chihli-designated example and the general imperial type could have shared a similar method of manufacture from the same period in 1911. One only need to observe the immense care and precision that can be seen on the "Dragon in the Clouds" Dollar, especially upon the characters side, to see that it was undoubtedly struck from specimen dies. Turning to the Chihli example, a robust strike and a simply sublime form of craftsmanship highlight seemingly every aspect. In addition to their possible linked past, each specimen presents a staggering degree of enticing eye appeal, with iridescent toning populating the peripheries upon each, with the general imperial Dollar offering a deeper aspect in this regard. Further, each example stands as one of the finest seen at PCGS, with the Chihli specimen merely exceeded by eight pieces, and the imperial specimen tied with just two others upon the apex of the census. Given their tantalizing eye appeal and status as potential sibling strikings, this lot presents the advanced collecting community with an opportunity like no other.
