Undated (1853) Round 25 Cents. BG-202. Rarity-6+. Liberty Head. MS-62 (PCGS). This semi-prooflike beauty also sports subtle olive highlights to dominant medium gold color. A sharply struck and flashy piece with solid BU quality and outstanding visual appeal. As with the BG-201 variety represented above, BG-202 is also attributed to the short-lived San Francisco jewelers Joseph Bros. This variety combines the obverse of BG-201 with a new reverse die on which the digit 5 in the denomination and the letters in the word CENTS are dramatically repunched. According to the 2003 edition of the Breen-Gillio reference, this variety was discovered by both John Work Garrett and F.C.C Boyd independently of each other. Examples are scarce in numismatic circles, the present offering another great opportunity to acquire a Period I rarity in the California small denomination gold series. From the Oregon Collection.
