1853-FD Round 25 Cents. BG-210. Rarity-7. Liberty Head. MS-62 (PCGS). Bright honey-gold surfaces are semi-prooflike in finish, the fields appreciably mirrored and supporting boldly impressed design elements. In MS-62 the present example is solidly in the Condition Census for the elusive BG-210 issue. PCGS CoinFacts estimates that perhaps as few as eight to 10 examples of this variety can be found today, an estimate that is undoubtedly based on the Bob Leonard census published in 2003. That listing includes 10 coins, but with Leonards typical qualifier, "Probably some duplication." A rare offering that will certainly elicit a strong bidding response.
From the firm of Frontier, Deviercy & Co., active in San Francisco 1853 to 1864. Makers mark, FD, below bust. Interestingly, the 4 in the fraction on the reverse is repunched and reversed, the same die used to strike the BG-209 variety, an example of which is offered above. From the Oregon Collection.
