1855 Round 25 Cents. BG-225. Rarity-7-. Liberty Head. MS-62 (PCGS). OGH. Bright satin to semi-reflective surfaces sport even color in pale golden-olive. Detail is bold to sharp throughout, the surfaces uncommonly smooth for the assigned grade. Struck from a late and, apparently, unlisted state of the dies, the obverse is shattered by numerous cracks and considerable evidence of die rust is evident on both sides.
This issue, attributed to Antoine Louis Nouizillet, has an extant population of only 10 to 12 specimens per PCGS CoinFacts. The Bob Leonard census published in 2003 includes 12 listings, again with the familiar comment about duplication. Interestingly, Jay Roe owned three different examples of this issue, finally settling on the PCGS MS-61 coin featured as lot 40 in our (Bowers and Merenas) sale of that important collection. The coin offered here, ranked #7 in the Leonard census, is finer and also represents an interesting late die state that further enhances its appeal for advanced specialists in this series. From the Oregon Collection. Earlier from Superiors Irving Goodman Collection sale, May 1996, lot 1600.
