1973-S Kennedy Half Dollar--Triple Struck, Second and Third Strikes 35% Off Center--Proof-67 Cameo (NGC). This visually stunning Mint error resulted when a properly struck Proof 1973-S half dollar failed to fully eject from the press, and was then struck two more times off center at 12 oclock. The coin rotated only slightly between the first impression and the off center strikes, and the second and third strikes closely overlap, although some separation between the design elements is discernible when examined with the aid of a loupe. Two full dates and two crisp S mintmarks are plainly evident to the unaided eye. Minimally toned in iridescent gold with deeply mirrored field areas are frosty design elements. Major errors such as this are rare on Proof coinage, the extra care that the Mint takes in producing and handling these specimens either precluding their creation, or intercepting such pieces before they escape the Mint.
