Cyphers (1837-1918) worked as a gunsmith in Skowhegan, ME from 1859 to 1868, moving to Greenville, MI and working there as a gunsmith from 1870 to 1906. He also worked with another gunsmith that counterstamped coins, Charles V. Ramsdell, in Bangor, ME (see following lots). This stamp is also listed on a two cent piece of 1864, an 1854 dime and an unlisted 1853 large cent previously sold by the consignor.From the Steve M. Tompkins Collection.
