E.K. BOOTHBY on an 1818 Matron Head large cent. Brunk B-879, Rulau ME-Po-5. Host coin Very Good. Edward K. Boothby (1819-1899) was a gunsmith working in Portland, ME from 1858 to the 1870s. According to the 1858-9 city directory he was located at 38 Green Street. He worked with Gilbert L. Bailey, a sporting goods dealer who also counterstamped coins. This date is unlisted in both Brunk and Rulau, where only two large cents dated 1828 and 1852 have been reported.From the Steve M. Tompkins Collection.
