1969 Apollo 11 Flown Robbins Medal. Sterling Silver. No. 218 of 450 Flown, presented to Jack Swigert. MS-66 (NGC).28 mm. Eagle in flight over the moon with the Earth in background and mission name APOLLO 11 inscribed along the upper border.
Peripheral inscription notes the names of the astronauts who flew this mission, ARMSTRONG - COLLINS - ALDRIN. Central inscription provides vital mission dates LAUNCHED / JULY 16, 1969 / LANDED / JULY 20, 1969 / RETURNED / JULY 21, 1969, medal flown number 218 below. A richly original pewter gray example with bold sandblast surfaces.<p>This highly significant medal was flown on the historic Apollo 11 mission, the first to land humans on the moon. The eagle on the obverse represents the Apollo Lunar Module named <em>Eagle</em>, the vessel in which Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon at 20:17 UTC on July 20, 1969. This medal was presented to astronaut Jack Swigert, one of 24 astronauts who flew to the moon. Swigert served as command module pilot on the ill-fated Apollo 13 mission, subject of the well known movie by the same name starring Tom Hanks, Bill Paxton, Kevin Bacon, Ed Harris and Gary Sinise. It is Kevin Bacon who portrays Swigert in the movie.
