1791 (ca. 1870) Berwick Academy Lambert Cogswell Medal. By J.S. and A.B. Wyon. Julian UN-9. Copper. MS-61 BN (NGC).44.2 mm x 36.9 mm, oval. Boldly defined with warm medium brown patina, this is a pleasingly smooth example in hand at the assigned grade level. One of the rarest medal types stuck by the Philadelphia Mint, three gold examples were struck for the Boston jewelry firm of Bigelow & Kennard, using this design by two of Britains greatest engravers. Two copper impressions and one white metal example are also known. The schools original plans called for the award of two medals for boys, one for a girl, but it is apparent that this award program was short-lived. We (Stacks) offered one of the gold strikings in our Minot Collection sale of May 2008; it realized $3,162.50. This is the our only offering for a copper striking that we can recall.
