New York--New York. Undated (1858) George H. Lovett. Miller-NY 495F. Copper. Reeded Edge. MS-66 BN (NGC).32 mm. Blushes of original mint orange color peer through an overlay of warm olive and autumn-brown patina, direct lighting calling forth vivid undertones of steel-blue and salmon pink. The strike is noticeably soft in the centers, a feature shared by the Rulau plate token, but the detail is considerably sharper toward the borders. Satiny and overall smooth in texture with just a few light spots scattered about, the most significant of which is well concealed within the rays to the right of the fasces on the reverse. The 2004 edition of the Rulau catalog on U.S. tokens states that Miller-NY 495F is known with a plain edge, but makes no mention of reeded edge pieces, as here.
