Lovely pewter gray surfaces exhibit a bold sandblast finish that is expectably smooth for the assigned grade. This medal was originally presented to Tomas P. Stafford, one of 24 people who flew to the moon. He was serving as chief of the Astronaut Office when the Apollo 9 mission was flown in 1969, a position he held until 1971.
