Congress of the United States. Walter Lowrie and Matthew St. Clair Clarke, editors. American State Papers. Documents, Legislative and Executive, of the Congress of the United States. Washington, D.C. Gales and Seaton. 1832-1859. In five volumes. Very Fine.13 x 8.5 inches. Hardbound in three-quarter tan calf with the leather borders ruled in gilt. Five raised spine bands, bordered in gilt ruling. Red spine labels in the second and third resulting panels, and a green one in the fifth, all lettered in gilt. Gilt rosette elements in the remaining panels. Marbled light brown flyleaves and pastedowns. All custom bound in April 1978 at the request of John J. Ford, Jr., and as such, beautifully matched. His small bookplates are affixed inside the front covers. The individual sections inside were seemingly separately sourced, as one bears the “released” mark of the Tennessee State Library and Archives, while another bears the purple ink stamps of the library of the United States House of Representatives. Some editions are on heavily toned paper, while most are bright and all are respectably clean with only an occasional chip or traces of light handling soil noted. A handsome and incredibly historic set covering matters of Finance from the first three decades of the United States, beginning the month before George Washington’s first Inauguration. Naturally, these volumes contain matters relating to the early coinage and establishment of the United States Mint and are of particular interest to numismatists. From the D. Brent Pogue Library.
