Single ruled accents at the leather borders in gilt. Four raised spine bands dotted in gilt, two resulting panels with red labels, lettered in gilt, and the remaining panels ornamented by gilt double borders around central floral ornaments. Integral blue cloth reinforcements inside the cover joints, finished with textured white pastedowns. Page tops finished in gilt. Integral blue ribbon place marker connects at the head of the spine. Probably bound for John J. Ford, Jr. as his cost code penciled at the upper corner of one end paper suggests both an acquisition and a later added cost, the usual format for his purchase and binding records. Title page and four full-page plates in color at the front, with black and white images of the recipients discussed. A magnificent and historic volume giving short histories of many early Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, from the first of the American Civil War, to participants in the Spanish American War. A volume dedicated to the bravery and actions of a few noble souls in defense of their country, which earned them their nation’s highest honor and gratitude. The author of this work was himself one of those men, having been awarded the Medal for his conduct at Chancellorsville, in 1863.
