Letter signed by Ulysses S. Grant. 1878.Personal letters from Presidents are downright scarce, especially letters between family members. This letter was penned on June 29th, 1878 to Ulysses S. Grants son, U.S. Grant Jr., or to whom Grant affectionately referred to as Buck. After Grants second term in office, he and his wife, Julia Grant, went on a tour of the world. The letter describes the Grants dinner plans with Prince Bismarck (Otto von Bismarck, who successfully unified Germany in 1871) and their previous meetings with Wilhelm I of Holland. Also mentioned are Grant buying stock from the Yellow Jacket Mining Co., and other financial adventures, which sadly would eventually lead to Grants personal downfall and financial worries as Grants son Buck was involved in a banking and brokerage company with Ferdinand Ward, who was discovered to have swindled Grant and many other unsuspecting investors out of their money. This personal letter is penned on Grants personal monogrammed stationery, hence the large blue "G" in the top left corner of the letter. Also included is a official portrait of Grant done by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing.
