“1814” Major General Winfield Scott medal. Original Dies. Copper, Bronzed. 65 mm. Julian MI-20. MS-65 BN (NGC). Lovely deep mahogany bronze with gentle mottling in the fields and slightly lighter tones in the peripheral recesses. Mostly satiny with soft, pleasing luster. A couple of small nicks in the reverse rim do not affect the design. As with others in this series, the original gold medal was struck in 1824, shortly after the dies were completed, and bronzes were struck for decades to follow. Bronze impressions are popular as these large medals are mostly beautifully executed and impressive, while silver impressions are very rare—enough so to be virtually uncollectible.
