“1814” Major General Peter B. Porter medal. Original Dies. Copper, Bronzed. 65 mm. Julian MI-18. MS-66 BN (NGC). A superb specimen of this attractively designed medal with deep mahogany bronze surfaces that show only the most trivial mellowing on the highest points of the relief. Satiny and lustrous with only a couple of minor marks visible upon close inspection. The dies were finished early in the 1820s, and the gold specimen was struck in December 1824. As with others in this series, the dies were in use for many years to satisfy collector demand for these elegantly designed memorials to the heroes of the War of 1812. Whenever this one was struck, it has been nicely cared for since.
