1814 Brigadier General Eleazer W. Ripley Medal. Bronzed Copper. 65 mm. Julian MI-19. Plain Edge. Mint State. Lovely deep mahogany-brown patina blankets both sides of this sharply defined example. Several light spots and wispy handling marks are scattered about, a concentration of the latter in the right obverse field inside the letters RIP in RIPLEY noted. Due to numerous delays for reasons that included Ripleys refusal to furnish a profile portrait of himself and dispute over his part in the two battles of Erie fought in 1814, the dies for this type were not finished until 1836, with the gold medal finally struck in March of 1838.
