Raton, Territory of New Mexico. $5 1882 Date Back. Fr. 533. The First NB. Charter #4734. PMG About Uncirculated 50 EPQ.This remarkably well preserved 1882 $5 Territorial Date Back is one of six such examples known from this Colfax County bank that was chartered in April of 1892. Four of those known, including the presently offered example, were sheet mates long recorded in the census as Extremely Fine. It is easy to surmise that these notes likely never circulated but were kept in sheet form until being cut and disbursed to collectors. This note first appeared in auction along with one of its sheet mates in a June 1980 NASCA auction where it realized $2500. <p>This bright and lightly handled example comes well framed by plentiful margins. Bold bank officers signatures are found along the bottom and pronounced overprint embossing is featured on the back of the note. Just one light center fold and one light horizontal fold account for the grade. The note is wonderfully original and PMG saw it fit to bestow their much coveted EPQ designation upon it, quite rare on any Territorial issue. This is certainly a remarkable note and one which should be strongly considered by any true National Currency specialist.
