Connecticut--New Haven. Undated Waterbury House. Rulau-E Conn 27. Rarity-8. Brass. 20 mm. VG Details--Environmental Damage (NGC).Marbled deep brassy-gold and charcoal patina to the obverse, the reverse is uniform brassy-gold save for a swirl of inactive encrustation in the upper left field. The former side retains bold outline detail to most design elements, the latter side with the digit 4 faint and only the lower portion of the peripheral design clear. Apart from the aforementioned encrustation, light surface scale on the obverse helps to explain the NGC qualifier. The in hand appearance is quite pleasing, nonetheless, and the rarity of this type underscores the significance of this offering for the advanced token enthusiast. This type is so elusive, in fact, that the plate "token" in the Rulau reference is a drawing instead of a picture of an actual specimen. From the Ralph A. Edson Collection.
