California--Sacramento. Undated (1856-1857) J.L. Polhemus. Miller-Calif 1A--Counterstamped on an 1855 Arrows Liberty Seated Quarter--Poor-1 (NGC).Wear for the host coin is commensurate with the assigned grade, the reverse nearly devoid of detail and the obverse retaining only faint outline definition to most of Libertys portrait. The final digit 5 in the date is barely discernible, and then again only with the aid of direct lighting and a strong loupe. The counterstamp, however, is bold and fully legible. Original silver gray patina overall with no handling marks that are out of context with the assigned grade. As of the 2004 printing of the Rulau token reference, 32 examples of this counterstamp are known on Liberty Seated quarters. From the Ralph A. Edson Collection.
