COLOMBIA. República de Colombia. 25 Centavos/Dos Reals, ND (ca. 1819). P-3r. Remainder. Uncertified. One of four denominations from a rare and historic series of early República notes. The notes were engraved and printed in the United States by Peter Maverick, New York, and have his imprint (under the vignette on this denomination). Maverick was one of the foundational American copper plate engravers of the period and his important obsolete banknote plate engraving included notes for the State Bank of New Jersey. Two plates were engraved by Maverick for this initial independence era series. One was for fractional denominations and the other for peso denominations. Virtually all the notes from this series observed are unissued remainders. After studying pedigrees, the only issued note from the series we traced was the 4 Reales sold from the Newman Collection in September 2016. That issued note realized $3,525, emphasizing that any example from the issue is very collectible and important. Small format size with denominations at the end in reales with its centavo counter "25” at center under the loaded burro vignette. A clean example and a charming type. The certified Pick-1r (PMG Very Fine 30) in the first sale realized $2,040 in spirited bidding. This note is uncertified and perhaps, long ago, it was removed from a silk backing. If so, this was done so professionally as to defy detection. The Eldorado Collection contained only two of the four denominations in this series which verifies it great rarity. Few are seen. It is essential for any well rounded collection and this is an important opportunity.
