Box Dollar Fashioned out of the Obverse of an 1877-dated Trade Dollar and the Reverse of a San Francisco Mint Trade Dollar. Very Fine.;Popularly thought to have been made to smuggle drugs, particularly opium, but actually made to be photography frames or lockets enclosing the image of a loved one. Over the years the glass (or celluloid) cover and the photograph of the present example have been lost, but their retaining ring is still present. Boldly toned charcoal-mauve overall.;
