1652 Oak Tree Threepence. Noe-26, Salmon 4-Ai, W-2990. Rarity-7-. No IN on Obverse. VF Details--Mounted (PCGS).16.8 grains. A rare variety with at least two of the confirmed examples dug in Massachusetts. The first is the Muddy River Collection coin found in Hanover, Massachusetts on a property that has been inhabited since the 1670s; we graded it Fine, Damaged, and it most recently sold in our November 2023 Auction. Mr. Augusts coin is accompanied by an old, heavily folded note with the handwritten message:
(1652) / Mass 3 [cent] silver coin found by grandfather John M. Woodworth in / [illegible name] orchard, Dudley St. / Dorchester Mass. near [illegible] / Found in 1870 - coin date 1652 / Oak Tree Threepence Good 15.00 Fine 25.00 / Decree leave to his son / Leslie E. Woodworth
The stamp of Leslie E. Woodworth, Cedar Ridge, California, is on the back of the note.
The coin shows evidence of cleaning after being found, for while some black encrustation remains in the protected areas around some of the design elements, the overall appearance is one of dull, muted pewter gray. A loop for suspension is attached to the top, just past 12 oclock. Both sides are well centered in strike, all major design elements clear apart from those at the left and right obverse borders, which are faint to absent.
Mike Hodder noted just four recorded examples of this Noe number: the Boyd-Ford coin, plated in Noe and Wurtzbach, which later became the primary Salmon coin and is also his plate; the Norweb coin; the Appleton-MHS-Hain coin (now impounded in the Lasser Collection at Colonial Williamsburg); and the Kendall coin, ex Lester Merkin on June 18, 1979. Another can be added courtesy of Andrew Pollocks extensive research - the George A. Merriweather specimen that sold as lot 154 in our (Bowers and Ruddys) November 1973 Rothert sale and later became one of the Salmon duplicates. A number of other low grade and/or impaired pieces have appeared at auction in recent years, including this one, the aforementioned Muddy River coin, the specimen in our August 2023 offering of the Sydney F. Martin Collection, the Maurice Storck coin in Heritages October 2020 sale, and a second Salmon duplicate, for a total population that is now hovering around a dozen coins. The finest in private hands are the aforementioned Kendall specimen and another newcomer to the census, the Heritage January 2022:3147 coin (although the Norweb specimen also deserves consideration in this context). None were displayed at the 1991 ANS Exhibition, and this variety was also missing from the Donald G. Partrick Collection. The present specimen, a suitable filler example of a leading rarity among Noe numbers, will surely see spirited bidding.PCGS# 915747. BASE PCGS# 18. NGC ID: 2ARF.From the Richard August Collection. Found in 1870 in an orchard in Dorchester, Massachusetts. Later ex Anthony Terranova.
