1652 Pine Tree Shilling. Large Planchet. Noe-4, Salmon 4-D, W-720. Rarity-4. Without Pellets at Trunk, Reversed Ns. EF-40 (PCGS).61.6 grains. Handsome pewter and dove gray patina with sandy-gold and charcoal highlights, this is an undeniably original EF in a Large Planchet Pine Tree. The obverse is nicely centered on a board, slightly out of round planchet, only the second letter T in MASATHVSETS shows appreciable softness, and it is still fully appreciable. The reverse periphery is beyond the flan at lower left with the border into the letters from 6 to 10 oclock, although the legend is fully legible. Central detail is sharp for the grade, and there are no marks of note apart from a few faint pin scratches in and around the centers that are ancient and well blended into the fabric of the coin; none of these are discernible in hand. Thin, shallow planchet flaws at upper right obverse and upper left reverse are as made, as is a bit of roughness in the flan on the reverse, before the Roman numeral X in the denomination. Circulated type collectors who prefer crusty originality in their silver coins will find much to appreciate in this Noe-4 Pine Tree.PCGS# 915754. BASE PCGS# 45372.
