Lot of (2) Undated (ca. 21st century) Abraham Lincoln / Emancipation Medals. Dies by John Adams Bolen. Musante JAB-20/28, for relevant types. Copper. Choice Mint State.25.4 mm. The first piece included here is a curious brockage from the obverse die of JAB-20, the Abraham Lincoln / With Malice Toward None medal, with an incuse impression of the same die on the reverse. Brilliant orange-red copper, about 2.8 mm thick at the rims, and with a plain edge. This was made at a "private Midwest mint" as a personal gift for Steve Tanenbaum, who had sold the maker the die and had a personal love of brockages. Unfortunately, Tanenbaum died before this unique striking could be presented to him. The second medal is from the same obverse, muled with the Emancipation medal (as seen on the gold impression offered in the previous lot). It is also brilliant orange-red copper and about 2.9 mm thick at the rims. Struck with plain edge, but marked RESTRIKE on the edge. Clearly from the same minting operation as the Tanenbaum brockage. An interesting pair! From the Claremont Collection. The Tanenbaum Gift brockage earlier ex Steve Hayden, December 2017, lot 997.
