Undated (ca. 1867) Andrew Jackson / The Stern Old Soldier Medal. By John Adams Bolen. Musante JAB-27. White Metal. MS-61 PL (NGC).25.3 mm. Medium gray surfaces with the usual scattered handling marks this soft composition is susceptible to and a couple of small oxidation spots. Brighter outlines around the obverse device frame it nicely, and the reverse is prooflike. Though commonly assumed to be a Kline restrike when in white metal, both Bolens notebook and the 1868 <em>AJN</em> listing attributed three tin impressions to Bolen directly. Kline likely made more, but this medal is from the early die state, without reverse rim crumbling and might well be an original. There are only three in our archives, and two are from the early state dies.From the Claremont Collection.
