1867 John Adams Bolen Store Card, With Signature. Musante JAB-24a, Rulau Ma-Sp 39. White Metal, Silvered. MS-63 (PCGS).25.3 mm. 95.3 grains. Medium to deep gray patina with pleasing accents of mottled pale blue, rose and gold in the silvered fields. Prooflike on both sides but showing a trace of bubbling in the fields where the underlying metal has pested a bit. A few small edge nicks are also noted. Quite rare in any composition. Our archives include just three distinct medals in copper and two in white metal, including a prior appearance of this example. Bolens annotated notebook references this type specifically, with his name below the bust, giving mintages of one silver, 15 copper, and 15 brass, but the dies were never sold. More likely the mintage was one silver (at ANS), 15 copper, one brass (which is known), and 15 in white metal. From the Claremont Collection. Earlier from our sale of the E Pluribus Unum Collection, November 2021 Baltimore Auction, lot 10213.
