Undated (ca. 1867) Thomas Jefferson / Equal and Exact Justice for All Men Medal. By John Adams Bolen. Musante JAB-26. Brass. Overstruck on an E. Ivins Token. MS-65 (NGC).25.3 mm. A beautiful piece with rich golden-brass surfaces that glimmer with bold prooflike brilliance. A few faint hairlines and specks are noted, but the overall eye appeal is superb. Boldly struck, with almost no evidence of the undertype seen on the obverse aside from a couple of faint letters left of JEFFERSON. The central shield, several stars around it, and a few letters of the legend of the E. Ivins merchant card (Miller Pa-232) can be seen on the reverse quite easily. Bolen reported one in brass as did the 1868 AJN listing. Johnson stated 14 were struck in brass. Likely very rare. We have handled four, including Bolens own, and one is at ANS. It might be unique on this host, however. Die state similar to that seen on Bolens own original. From the Claremont Collection. Earlier from our sale of the Tim Gabriele Collection, November 2017 Baltimore Auction, lot 238.
