Undated (ca. 1867) Abraham Lincoln / Emancipation Medal. By John Adams Bolen. Musante JAB-28, Cunningham 29-120C, King-237. Copper. MS-64 BN (NGC).25.3 mm. Rich blue, sea foam green and gold toning mottled through the reflective obverse fields while the reverse is somewhat less intensely toned but also has some faded rosy red and violet. Well struck on a substantial flan with a partial wire rim around the reverse. A few scattered handling marks. Probably a Bolen original, and one of 16 reported struck in the 1868 AJN listing - a likely reliable accounting considering that it was based on Bolens notes and he had cut the dies within just a year of publication. The AJN gave mintages of three in silver, three in tin and one in brass, in addition. We have seen only one in silver, Bolens own, and two in white metal (tin). A fairly scarce medal that will appeal not only to Bolen and Lincoln collectors, but also, increasingly, to those interested in Emancipation. From the Claremont Collection.
