Undated (ca. 1865) Abraham Lincoln / With Malice Toward None Medal. By John Adams Bolen. Musante JAB-20, Cunningham 29-010W, King-866. White Metal. MS-62 (PCGS).25 mm. Mottled gray surfaces with slightly striated patina on the reverse. Nicely struck on a flan of apparent medium thickness, and the early die state without the aggressive reverse breaks that later form (seen on the overstruck piece offered in the previous lot). Even the extremely faint reverse cracks seen on the thick early state copper example previously offered do not seem to be present on this piece. Though on a thinner flan, which has occasionally been pointed to as evidence of a restrike, this early die state suggests (in line with evidence we have seen in other offerings) that the thickness of the flan has no relationship to the maker. This is almost certainly among the 40 in tin reported to have been made in Bolens shop. From the Claremont Collection.
