Although high grade examples of this design type can be had with ease thanks a substantial supply of notes representing a subsequent Friedberg Number; this note is remarkable in another aspect that has nothing to do with the grade assigned by PCGS Banknote or the almost psychedelic back design composed from a mass of interlocking floral and geometric arrangements. Featuring a portrait of Winfield Scott Hancock at left, this design is surprisingly typical for the period and represents the earliest iteration of this type and denomination on account of the engraved signatures of Rosecrans and Jordan who held their respective positions from 1885 to 1887 until Jordan resigned to become the President of the Western National Bank of New York (Charter# 3700). Yet what is remarkable about this example is that a fairly low serial number of B459 can be observed in the appropriate panels and accounts for a pleasing sight when held against most of this notes unremarkable peers whether it be a piece that circulated extensively or just a boring serial number in the vein of B1226967. Such a distinction betrays this note as something obviously saved with a degree of sentiment in the 1880s and should help see this piece to a firm realization once it crosses the auction block after a spirited session of bidding.
