(t) CHINA. Hunan Soviet. Dollar, 1931 (in characters). Uncertain Mint, possibly in Pingchiang. PCGS Genuine--Scratch, VF Details. L&M-886 (this coin illustrated); K-801; KM-1.1; WS-1333; Chang-CH252; Wenchao-p. 676, 107 (rarity: ★★★★). Variety with large (hallow, six-pointed) stars. One of the earliest communist issues, this alluring Soviet Dollar is also one of the RAREST, with the present specimen standing as just the second that we have offered, and the first since our April 2012 Hong Kong Auction. In the late 1920s, given the growth of communist forces and their armies that needed payment, there was a subsequent rise in communist banks and mobile facilities that could print money and strike coinage. This mobile minting accounts for the overall lack of craftsmanship on the example here, with Kann mentioning that "...its outward appearance is merely relatively good, for the workmanship is still defective. The machinery which the mobile soviet armies then had at their disposal must have been very primitive." Nevertheless, despite the lack of more modern minting technology and a more spartan design, this example remains rather impressive and seemingly a bit conservatively graded, as the overall degree of handling and wear is less than would otherwise be assumed from its assessed level. The noted scratches occur near 8 oclock on the obverse, though appear quite old and blend in well with the darker, gunmetal gray toning. Of note, the reverse design somewhat parallels that of the Yuan Shih-kai series as well as the ensuing "National Emblem" Dollar of 1923, with the overall style presented here being quite similar to the contemporary "warlord" Yuan Shih-kai types--also produced under circumstances more utilitarian than artistic. A monumental opportunity for the advanced collector of Soviet issues, especially given the paucity of the type in the market and its published nature in the most recent edition of L&M.From the KL Collection.
