Original Philadelphia Mint Cloth Bag for $5,000 Worth of 1928 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles. 6.5 inches x 14 inches. A heavy canvas bag printed on the front: No. 92 / $5,000 / DOUBLE EAGLES / U.S. MINT / PHILADELPHIA / 1928. The number 92 indicates that this bag was part of the Mints 92nd delivery of double eagles from the coiner that year. It allowed for the tracing of the coins in this delivery should any problems be discovered during the Special Assay. These are rare, our multiple offerings in this sale notwithstanding, and once housed 250 Mint State Saint-Gaudens double eagles. The condition is excellent, with only minor signs of handling, a few trivial scuffs, all as expected for an item of this type. A 0.75 inch split at the upper left on the back of the bag is noted.
