1862 Monitor / Merrimac Medal. By George Hampden Lovett. Schenkman MM-4. Copper. MS-64 BN (PCGS). 31 mm. Attractively original surfaces exhibit warm toning in olive-brown through which ample mint color in vivid rose-orange shines as the medal dips into a light. Both sides are smooth and satiny with a sharply to fully executed strike. This fascinating and intricately engraved type depicts the "First Battle of the Ironclads", pitting the U.S.S. Monitor against the Confederate Merrimac off Hampton Roads, Virginia on March 9, 1862.
