1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 46-e, W-5250. Rarity-1. Outlined Shield--Clipped Planchet--AU-55 (PCGS). 141.0 grains. A very high quality coin that will appeal equally to die variety, die state, and type coin collectors. Struck from the latest known die state of Maris 46-e, called obverse Die State 5 by S/H/I. The intensely clashed dies have caused acute failure of the obverse die in the general region below the horses head, an area whose study is complicated by the presence of the natural rough surface of the planchet that was not obliterated by the force of the strike. Surfaces are glossy, smooth and trouble-free, this high grade Maris 46-e is hallmarked by a decent sized curved clip around the 10:00 position of the obverse. From our Collection SLT sale, January 2012, lot 7570.
