1694 Carolina Elephant Token. Hodder 2-F, W-12120. Rarity-6. PROPRIETORS, O/E. VF-35 (PCGS). A solid representative of this classic early American rarity. Glossy dark chocolate-brown surfaces have some small areas of microporosity and brick red patina, but there are no appreciable marks from circulation and the overall sharpness and preservation are remarkable for the assigned grade. The detail throughout the Elephant and the reverse legends is essentially full and much sharper than normally found on examples at the Very Fine level. In fact, this piece rivals the PCGS AU-53 Appleton-Massachusetts Historical Society-Archangel coin we sold in October 2018, both in terms of sharpness and surface quality. Here is an excellent example of this elusive issue that would make a significant addition to an advanced colonial type set. From Heritages January 2017 FUN Auction, lot 5509.
