1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 32-T, W-5100. Rarity-2. Outlined Shield. AU-55 (PCGS). An outstanding New Jersey copper with beautiful, problem-free, ruddy brown surfaces that display substantial mint gloss. Very sharply struck, all of the fine detail of both sides is fully brought up and only barely worn. The strike was trivially off center, only affecting portions of the dentils and taking little away from the outstanding eye appeal. This piece is a virtual twin, if not as perfectly centered, to the PCGS AU-55 Dr. Gordon Shaw coin which realized $8,225 in our March 2017 Baltimore Auction. Maris 32-T is considered by many to be one the more handsome varieties in the series and is sought after by type and die variety collectors alike. This will make a lovely addition to one fortunate collectors cabinet.
