1787 Auctori Plebis Token. W-8770. Rarity-3. MS-61 BN (PCGS). 110.0 grains. An extremely rare mint state example, one of just two MS-61 graded specimens at PCGS with none finer. This piece boasts remarkably well preserved surfaces that retain as much glossy luster, mint frost, and delicate die lines as weve ever seen on the issue. Choice color, too, with a predominantly tan-brown patina and a bit of reddish-chocolate at the obverse effigys face and reverse lion. Both sides are reasonably well centered though portions of the reverse date and legends are off the planchet as is always the case since the die was too big for the planchets. Some unobtrusive planchet flakes and tiny marks limit the grade of what would otherwise be a Choice Mint State example of the type. A top notch piece that is clearly elevated above the narrow grade range in which these normally come. From the Norman G. Peters Collection.
