Undated (ca. 1882) Lincoln and Garfield Medalet. By William Barber. Julian PR-40, Cunningham 22-520X, King-524. Gold. Extremely Fine, Rim Filing.26 mm. 11.96 grams. Vivid medium gold surfaces are boldly to sharply defined overall with much of the prooflike reflectivity remaining in the fields. A few nicks in the right obverse field are noted, while our qualifier primarily concerns an area of rim filing at 10-11 oclock on the same side. While this type is relatively common for a gold medal from its era, it is very rare in Gem quality. Most look about like this, underlining the distribution of this handsome memorial production to a primarily non-numismatic audience. Many became jewelry. The mintage in gold was just 297 pieces delivered in 1882, per both Julian (1977) and Cunningham (2015).From the Larry Baber Collection. Collector envelope with attribution notation included.
