1878 Valley Forge Centennial Medal. By William Barber. Musante GW-959, Baker-449, Julian CM-48, HK-136. Silver. MS-62 (NGC).41 mm. With glints of pale rose peripheral color to otherwise pearl-gray surfaces. The silver impressions of this type were among the first that the U.S. Mint struck in fiscal year 1877/1878, but more were produced as need arose. According to our survey of mint records published in Robert Julians Medals of the United States Mint</em>, 62 pieces were struck in silver between 1877 and 1904 -- a rather small number for this popular medal that appeal to a broad collector base. From the Larry Baber Collection.
