1840 William Henry Harrison Sulfide. DeWitt-WHH 1840-99. White Metal, Enamel and Glass. Very Fine.42 mm. The white metal frame is intact, and pierced for suspension. The glass crystals on each side are quite convex, exhibit heavy scuffing, and there are small edge chips on the obverse. The enameled interior has lost some of its background color but the portrait and log cabin still stand out sharply. Sullivan notes that this type is also believed to exist for James Polk, but we have never seen that format. None was in the extensive Ford Collection. When this piece was sold in Presidentials Auction #81, Joe Levine referenced a Mint State example having brought more than $11,000 six years prior to his sale, noting the prized nature of the type in high grade. Considering the rarity, just about any example is very desirable. From Presidential Coin and Antique Co.
